A Thousand Words Thursday #8

I need this on audio.
I think I'm going to transcribe it.

Right now.

1:38 pm, here it is:

A Thousand Words Thursday #8

My audio transcription interpretation. Thanks be to God! Print and share.

“PENTECOST WILL SET YOUR RELIGION ON FIRE!” Sermon by Pastor Guy Parrish, under the anointing

And there’s something tragically missing out of the Church today. And it’s not décor and it’s not entertainment, and it’s not just a good time and it’s not just even feeling good when you leave. It’s that experience that comes from God that is subsequent to salvation, and it’s called THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY GHOST.

HE said there is one coming after me that’s going to give you a baptism in FIRE, and that Holy Ghost is that fire.

My question this morning is this—do you have that baptism of the Holy Ghost? I made up my mind this morning that I’m preaching what God wants me to preach because there needs… to be… A REVIVAL. THERE NEEDS TO BE AN ANOINTING. THERE NEEDS TO BE A PENTECOST.

And you know what, Pentecost is not dead, the Church is not dead. You know how I know the Church is not dead, because God is not dead. As long as God’s alive, the Church is alive. As long as there is breath in God, they’ll be breath in the Church.

Now some of you have the evidence of religion on your fingers, and you have it in your lap and you have it on your lips. And you come to Church, but you leave out just as empty as you come. That’s never God’s plan. God wants you to be filled UP. God wants you to be full.

God said out of your belly shall flow rivers of Living. Water. It’s not dead streams or dead ponds; it’s Living WATER. I want you to know that if there’s ever been a time that we need a baptism of the Holy Ghost, IT IS TODAY. It’s Pentecost now, why wait another year, why wait another ten years. Why say, “well it’s for somebody else, but it’s not for me?” I can tell you, every promise in the Book is for you!

Everything GOD ever said will come to pass—WILL come to pass, but you’ve GOT TO WANT IT BAD ENOUGH! ARE you FULL of the Spirit of GOD this morning!

WE need a baptism of POWER and of FIRE; and THANK GOD I want you to know it only comes with desire! You’ve got to want it bad enough. Why, because the Power of the Holy Ghost is more powerful than demons, it’s more powerful than devils, it’s more powerful than religion. HE’s more powerful than anything you could possibly imagine.

You talk about nuclear power, brother THIS is a greater power than NUCLEAR power. THIS IS THE POWER OF THE HOLY GHOST!! You need to be baptized with HIM. And if the Church could ever learn this and understand this, this is where our power is at.

It’s NOT in the program. It’s NOT in the entertainment, it’s not in the great musicians that we have or the halfway decent pastors—that sometimes he is—it’s NONE of that! You see the problem is we’ve LOST sight of where the real power is. We need to be full of the HOLY Ghost. We need Pentecost breathed back into us; we need to take note that JESUS is in the house—and the WORLD needs to take note that we’ve BEEN WITH JESUS! Because when we’ve been with Jesus, things are going to happen—devils are going to be bashed and devils are going to be cast out, and miracles are going to HAPPEN because GOD IS A GOD OF POWER, AND DON’T YOU EVER FORGET IT! He STILL BAPTIZES in the Holy Ghost. Hallelujah.

Let Pentecost set your religion on fire.

Best,

Mark 1:14-15.

Sweet Parable

Just going to scratch the surface here.
Hadn't initially planned on blogging this, but after tonight's additional revelation about the weed and the flower, I knew I should! :D

Proverbs 28:26, He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.
I came across this scripture one evening as I was reviewing the Book of Proverbs [Wisdom!] :D. The revelation that I received from this scripture, is this: homosexuality.

Read that scripture again, each part.
  • "He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool:" (trusting emotions and feelings is foolish)
  • "but whoso walketh wisely," (choosing right from wrong)
  • "he shall be delivered." (set free, delivered, BROUGHT OUT)
Amen. Glory to God.

Now, the parable is this:

A homosexual is as a weed imitating a flower.
Trying to blend in with that which is good.
Whose roots must be plucked from the ground.
From its depths.

Uprooted.

Dying, then being replanted on good ground; assuming a better foundation.
Reborn into whom God created it to be: in His image.
Only when the weed has died, will it begin to grow, and blossom.
Only then will it be delivered, set free.
Rain shall come, floods of blessings. God's covenant with his holy peoples...

This would make a really great teaching lesson.
I give you permission to take freely of it. Thank you Holy Spirit!!
And, thanks mom who has always cautioned me about WEEDS (in the natural ;)

Best!,
Whit

Was watching this video series on YouTube called,

BIBLICAL HEBREW LANGUAGE - PART 2

Really great teaching, by the way. Gonna finish it up soon [the series] , LORD willing.

Near the end of part two, I instinctively put my head down in my palm and said "Doh!" As in, "DUH! lol, that's so easy!" So simple-- no one can figure it out.

And, me and my heart for sign language, looked up the sign for "dumb" on www.signingsavvy.com, and there ya have it-- the sign for "dumb" is similar to the one I naturally signed after watching part two of the teaching lesson above!

And, have you seen 5:15 - 6:35 of the video? I made a comment on YouTube, something like "LORD, how I adore You, wowwwwww. I'm dumb-stricken."

Happy Is He

Hey You!!

I hope everyone is having a blessed Friday. God has been so miraculous. I was reflecting on His graciousness just last evening and couldn't fall asleep as quickly. Man, the Lord has brought me through so much. I haven't even talked about even the likes of it here on this blog. Phenomenal is our God, He is leading me to write a book... wow, Lord. Just went through this trial and test two months ago and I already feel the Holy Spirit tugging on me to write a testimonial. Glory. So, be on the lookout... you'll be one of the first to hear about it.

Bible Study this Week

Earlier this week Pastor Nichols' message was "I refuse to kill myself and I will not lay down and die."

Mark 4:19 says "And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful."

He used this scripture to let us know that the devil desires to wear us out naturally, physically and spiritually so that we become unfruitful in the Lord and discontinue doing His will. Pastor Nichols spoke about the wayside hearers [of the Word], the stonyground hearers and the thornyground hearers...
  • Don't allow thorns to influence you.
  • Be in a position to develop deep roots, meaning-- stay in God's will. Don't do anything to purposely get out of God's line of vision. Stay focused, keep your eye on the prize.
  • Don't allow thorns to choke the life out of you, the Word that God has placed within you.
Pastor also spoke that the pursuit of happiness is vain. "Happiness is not something you pursue, but something we receive." The Book of Ecclesiastes is a great reference book in terms of vanity and futility.
  • Proverbs 29:18 says "Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he."
  • Psalm 146:5 says "Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his God:"
"Happy" in the Old Testament translates to the Hebrew word "esher" which means blessed. In the New Testament, the word "happy" translates to the Greek word "makarios" which also means blessed, supremely blest, fortunate, well-off... blessed, HAPPY. This is what the joy of the Lord is. When we are content in the Lord, we are happy.

I thank God for showing me this. Because, we do have a tendency to not be happy until our circumstances permit or until God does something for us, but God forgive our ungratefulness. We are already blessed... we should already be happy in the Lord! If you have salvation, blessed and Happy is He. If you've got your health and you're breathing, praise God, shout unto the Lord you're blessed! I thank God for His mercy. What are you thankful for today? How has God blessed you-- How happy, blessed and content in the Lord are you?

Glory.
Bask in the Lord!,
Whitney

P.S.

Call my Pastor with your relationship (marital/spouse, etc) questions. God blessed them to produce a phenomenal book recently on relationship issues titled "No More Drama," the flier is below as well. They've just began their radio talk show. Glory to God. Discipline, Self Control & Obedience

Bible Study with God:
A Word the Lord gave me on 3/13/09 that I did not blog about. I'm getting better about doing as the Lord says, as He says it, so have mercy:

"Discipline, Self Control & Obedience"

Acts 5:42 says "And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ."

Acts 6:4 says "But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word."

Discipline

God says in Acts 6:4 that we must give ourselves over to continual prayer and the administering, supplying, speaking and teaching the Word of God (see Acts 5:42). When we do this, we are girded about (see Ephesians 6:11), we are prepared with the Word of God for anything that may come up against us (see Ephesians 6:13). God prepares us ahead of time so that when trials and the adversary comes to destroy, kill and devour (see John 10:10) that we will be armed with the Word of the Lord (See Ephesians 6:17). Acts 5:42 says that the disciples of Christ did not stop teaching and preaching Jesus as The Christ; Jesus Christ crucified. No matter the situation, don't deny your faith. Don't deny your God. Lord, have mercy. Testify of our Lord JESUS CHRIST. Be not intimidated. The devil is a liar. God is searching for soldiers on the battlefield for Him. He needs (the body of Christ) those that will worship Him in spirit and truth. John 4:24 says "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth." So, be encouraged and don't be afraid to speak of the goodness and glory of our Lord and Saviour. The devil is a LIAR and YOU beloved child of God have power, power in the name of Jesus. Luke 10:19 says "Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you."

Self Control

Your words are life (see Proverbs 18:21), they live. They dwell. The Word of GOD is life, it lives, it's alive, it's living, it dwells. So, when you SPEAK the Word, you are speaking LIFE. Speak Life. Glory to God. Rebuke the devil, rebuke the adversary. Be not tempted of his lies. Call him out. Call him out. At the name of Jesus, demons have GOT to tremble. Devil, you are a liar. Thank you, Jesus. But when you speak evil, wrongdoing, mischief, strife, hatings, backbitings, gossip and maliciousness you are also speaking THAT to life (see James 3:6). Words are powerful and that is a reason why God tells us to keep all of our members [of our bodies] holy (see Romans 6:13, 19). Whether that be your tongue, lips or feet. Keep it holy before the Lord. Don't bless and curse with your mouth; this is an abomination unto the Lord (see Psalm 109:28, Matthew 5:44, Luke 6:28, Romans 12:14). Lord Jesus, grant us self control/temperance (see 2 Peter 1:6) in the name of Jesus; control over our own members. Thank You, God.

Obedience

Continual prayer and personal Bible study is essential to the growing Christian (see Acts 6:4) (we are all growing according to the Lord's will), it is essential to the Christian walk. It's from God whom all blessings come. If we are not prayed up in our Word, then we are easy targets for the devil. Don't be a target and don't be fooled. The enemy comes to kill. Jesus says in John 10:10 that he [the enemy] comes to KILL. He wants you dead. Don't die, beloved. Ask the Lord of strength in Jesus' name, strength to withstand and endure. The remainder of that verse (John 10:10), Jesus Christ says "... I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." Life comes through Jesus Christ. For HE is The Way, the Truth and The Life (see John 14:6). So, let's be good stewards and harken unto the voice of the Lord. Let's obey our God. Let's offer our lives up for him through sacrifice of ourselves. Sacrifice takes obedience, discipline and self control. We have to want to do it. Someone can preach, teach and talk all day to you about these three things, but it's not until YOU want to make the change that you will be changed and see a change. Glory.

Bless others. Bless and curse not (see Psalm 109:28, Matthew 5:44, Luke 6:28, Romans 12:14). Bless your brothers and sisters in Christ. If the Lord is leading you to speak LIFE into the life of someone else, seize the opportunity. Don't leave them hanging. Minister the Word of our precious Saviour (Acts 6:4). Lord, help us.

Glory to God,
Whitney

"Pastor sure can preach."

Ministry

I'm sure you've heard that phrase before. I'm smiling even as I glance at the title. My new church home is where I'm glad to be every day of the week. I'm sure there's something going on every day, but since joining last Sunday I've been to 8 a.m. church service, a volunteer meeting and Bible study. If I could live at church I would. Just church. Any of the churches I've visited in the past year... I could just dwell there. That's why it's so important to be involved in church services and activities. When we get involved we have a place in the church, a sense of belonging and worth; it's where we are operating in our gifts and participating in ministry. Our identity is in Jesus Christ, from whom all blessings come, but our ministry is our gift from God, offered up to God, where our blessings and inheritance stem from. For a long time I didn't participate in any ministry within the church because I hadn't a clue where the Lord wanted to activate my gifts, so I just sat on the sidelines; I didn't want to be out of place-- or worse, in the wrong place/ministry [for me]. Some of it was procrastination too, so Lord forgive me. But now I have direction. Well, I've always had direction, for the Lord tells us to acknowledge Him in ALL of our ways, and HE will direct our paths (emphasis added) [See Proverbs 3:6]. Glory to God. But, I mean "direction" in the sense of belonging to the "right" church in terms of where the Lord wants me to be. Again, that's why it's so important to seek God, listen and wait on HIM to tell you where you need to be [as far as a church home, ministry, where to live, etc]. Trust in Him and He will take care of you. I'm a living witness.

Now, back to "Pastor sure can preach."

Lol. I love Pastor Nichols. He always tells it like it is-- I know, I talk like I've been attending the church for a long time, but the Spirit of the Lord allows me to feel as though I've known Him forever... because we're all brothers and sisters in Christ and the Spirit of the Lord recognizes those that are His [Christ's]. There's nothing like true and sound doctrine. I love it and the body of Christ needs it. I thank God for my Shepherd and I pray that the Lord Jesus keeps him in perfect peace, grants him the confidence to carry out His [God's] will and gives him endurance and strength for the long haul. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

On Sunday morning Pastor spoke on expectations. The message was "Don't lose hope." Psalm 146 was the passage and he was discussing covenant vs. contractional relationships. Here are a few quotes from the sermon and Bible Study to the Saints of God, since the messages were intertwined. Brackets added by me for clarification and additional depth. All glory to our Father which art in Heaven.
  • "When the world is turned upside down [in turmoil, heartache and uneasiness], you know that you [Child of God,] have Jesus Christ and His righteousness."
  • "Human love [relationships] fails because it is imperfect [and oftentimes not God-ordained]."
  • "The world cannot curse [undo] that which is blessed [by God, Saints]."
  • "The only way people [the world] can get this [mood-changing, emotional] power [over us] is if we give it to them."
  • "Don't lower your expectations [of people], shift them [to God because He will never disappoint, leave or forsake you]. "My expectation is in God."
He also discussed relegating vs. elevating.
  1. Relegate means to deduce in importance. The only way to relegate, as Pastor said, is to dwell on the past. Dwelling in the past delays the future. [Glory, glory this is good and very true. I'm a witness].
  2. Elevate means to go higher [in the Lord]. We must elevate our minds. Our body accomodates our mind; wherever your mind goes, your body will follow also. [What's that scripture? "Whatever a man thinketh in his heart, so shall he be."] Elevate your mind from the flesh to the spirit; meaning think and meditate on the good things of our God [spiritual] and leave that which is fleshly [carnal] behind. [If you do this, your body will follow your mind-- your actions will follow your thoughts... Selah!]
Scriptures to read in your Bibles:
Psalm 146
Psalm 1:2
Luke 4:18
Hebrews 11

Be encouraged,
Whitney

"Barriers of Discipleship"

Church service was good today. I truly enjoyed myself. I visited my childhood church with my older sister. I'm technically still a "member" of the church because I joined when I was younger, but since then I've moved on and ventured out to find my "new church home," if I might say.

Anywho, the message was amazing. I'm not used to Pastor Davis preaching such a convicting message-- or maybe he always does, I was just too young to pick up on it. The message was "Barriers of Discipleship." He began by defining the word "barriers," stating that barriers in our lives are "structures that hinder action." Pastor was saying that the Lord requires us to not only know the benefits of discipleship, but the barriers as well. This keeps us accountable.

The scripture that he gave was from Matthew 28, you know... the great commission, where Jesus tells us to go and teach all nations. The word "teach" is translated to "make disciples of." Jesus tells us to go and make disciples of the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit-- or, baptizing "in the name of Jesus Christ."

The scriptures he used to teach the message came from Luke 9:23, 57 and John 15. He stated that the first barrier is when we do not deny ourselves for Christ's sake... when it's our [fleshly] will waring against the Lord's [holy] will. Pastor Davis said this is a barrier in the lives of God's people. He also said that you cannot make disciples until you become a disciple-- or, you cannot bring anyone to Christ until you are a devout and sincere follower of Christ yourself. That was really good to me.

Another thing he mentioned was, if you take the word "self" and reverse it, adding an "h," you get the word "flesh." That really blessed my spirit. It's true. Our will is self-flesh; not self-less, it's selfish and the Lord's will requires sacrifice and surrendering ourselves and our own will. We must give it all up for Christ Jesus.

The second barrier (the first was "not denying self") was "If you don't sacrifice, you won't be able to serve." Meaning, if we don't sacrifice our will and our way, we as disciples of Christ will not be able to serve others and edify the Kingdom of God because God says in scripture that we cannot serve two masters-- it's either self or God, Christ Jesus. Particularly, Pastor was talking about the church ("church" in a general sense) not paying tithes. How can you trust God to bless you if you won't bless His sanctuary? It was kinda like that... I've never paid tithes in my life. I always thought "the ADULTS" pay tithes and I was OK. LOL, I'm a nerd. But, Lord willing I will trust God to provide for me as I give Him my 10th.

In John 15, Pastor was stating how Jesus is the True Vine and how a branch cannot bear fruit of itself; apart from God we can do nothing. One of my favorite quotes from the sermon was "Your vision comes with a provision that He has for you." That quote reminds me of what God says about establishing our thoughts and granting us the desires of our hearts... God knows what we desire and if it's pure, holy and in line with His precious will, He will give it to us. After all, He tells His children that anything we ask in His name, He will give to us (according to His will). God will make the provision. He will take care of us. That's why it's so important to surrender all and trust God to do the rest. Pastor said, "Whatever God designs, He can build!" --Now that's the beauty of the Lord. Glory to God.

I pray that the Lord tears down the barriers in your life that is holding you back from becoming a true disciple of Him. Pray my strength as I pray yours. Let's pay our tithes and trust the Lord to take care of us. We must bless the men and women of God. The ones that have been called have been commissioned (we're all commissioned according to Matthew 28) to do a great work and they are trusting the Lord to provide for them, so we must also give our 10th [10 percent of your income to the church] and trust that God will take care of us. It's a partnership--me and God, you and God-- we're all in this thing together, so let's do it right.

Wisdom: "The End of the World: What Does the Bible Say?"

I would like to begin out by proclaiming that couponing, for me personally, is a hobby. Dictionary.com defines a hobby as "an activity or interest pursued for pleasure or relaxation and not as a main occupation." Since it is a leisurely activity simply pursued for my own interests, versus being a necessity (such as reading the Bible and learning of God's ways), I trust that God will not allow it to become an obsession. He has been pruning some things from my life lately (see post "Tech-cation?") that I reeeeeeeeeeeeally enjoy doing and couponing is one of them, so I wouldn't be surprised if I go without couponing for a while in order to draw nearer to Him. By couponing, I mean being super-active on the couponmom.com forums in addition to clipping, clipping.............. and clipping, and filing, sorting and shopping. Summed up, couponing is a hobby that I enjoy, but if it means excessive time apart from God, I don't want it.

Another tidbit,
I write the majority of my blogging posts in a Word Document before I post it to blogger.com (this website), so the dates may conflict with the verbiage I use (such as the words, "today," "tomorrow," "yesterday," etc). And, blogger.com is in a different time zone than me so the actual times posted below the post is behind by at least 4 hours. (Update 2/1/09--Dates are now correct).

So, onto the post for today... :)

I was signing onto my laptop for like the first time all day, I believe, and as I was waiting for the Internet to load I saw an archived article from 2003 written by BeyondToday.tv in my news feed, titled "The End of the World: What Does the Bible Say?" This article truly blessed my spirit. It was absolutely amazing, all glory goes to God; such a wealth of information and wisdom within this article. God is teaching and I'm so grateful that I'm listening and learning. I pray that the Lord speaks to You through this urgent message as well. This is my prayer. , God bless you.

The link is here, but I will post the entire article as well:

The End of the World: What Does the Bible Say?

For centuries people have read the Bible and concluded that the world will come to an end. But will it? If so, how? What do the Scriptures teach about the end of the world?

by Noel Horner

Nearly two millennia ago the disciples of Jesus of Nazareth asked Him a question that has intrigued people ever since: "What shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?" (Matthew 24:3, King James Version).

People in every generation since have wondered about this. Will the world literally end? If so, how? Why? And when? What does the Bible really say about this crucial and disturbing question?

Religious people aren't the only ones asking these questions. In recent decades people from many walks of life have expressed concern about the possibility of the end of the world as we know it. Politicians, educators and scientists foresee the potential destruction of our world from a number of causes—including nuclear warfare, environmental disaster, planetary pollution, overpopulation, killer diseases and collision with a comet or asteroid.

Potential devastation from the sky

Although some of these possibilities are unlikely, others present a real threat. Based on the increasing number of gigantic impact craters discovered in recent years, scientists believe that a collision between earth and a killer asteroid is inevitable.

What would be the result of such a violent encounter? "An asteroid only a kilometer across would create cosmic havoc by impacting on the earth," writes Michio Kaku, professor of theoretical physics at City College of New York. ". . . The shock wave would flatten much of the United States. If it hit the oceans, the tidal wave it created could be a mile high, enough to flood most coastal cities on earth" (Visions: How Science Will Revolutionize the 21st Century, 1997, p. 317).

In 1908 a meteor or comet exploded over a remote area of Siberia. Though it was relatively small, with an estimated diameter of only about 50 yards, it flattened 1,000 square miles of forest, felling 80 million trees. The energy released by that celestial missile is estimated to be about equal to that of a large hydrogen bomb. The resulting tremors were recorded as far away as London. (To learn how such events might tie in with Bible prophecy, see "Will Civilization End in Global Cataclysm?")

The increasing nuclear threat

Experts generally agree that, of all possible means of destroying humanity, nuclear weapons pose the greatest threat.

And the genie cannot be put back in the bottle. Austrian theologian Ulrich Kortner put it this way: "The nuclear threat . . . constitutes not a temporary, but rather an irrevocable global threat. The actual possibility of an end to all life is now a constituent part of our reality" (The End of the World: A Theological Interpretation, 1995, pp. 229-230, emphasis added).

Some sober scientists go even farther, saying that nuclear annihilation is inevitable. The late Carl Sagan, perhaps the world's best-known scientist before his death in 1996, wrote that "the development of nuclear weapons and their delivery systems will, sooner or later, lead to global disaster" (Cosmos, 1980, p. 328).

With the Cold War ended, the probability of all-out nuclear war between countries has lessened for the time being, but the continuing addition of more nations to the nuclear club ratchets the threat back upward.

If North Korea has successfully developed nuclear weapons—as it has strongly hinted it has done—the nuclear club of nations now totals 10. More than 50,000 nuclear weapons exist in the world, many in dangerously unstable places. No one dares dismiss the idea that terrorist groups, if they can get their hands on nuclear devices, will use them in pursuit of their deadly aims.

Optimistic scientists believe that, thanks to continuing discoveries in science and technology, the nations will realize they must cooperate and work together to develop a unified global civilization. However, admits Dr. Kaku, "in the background always lurks the possibility of a nuclear war, the outbreak of a deadly pandemic, or a collapse of the environment" (p. 19).

Is time running out?

Reagan expressed concern that Armageddon may occur in our generation. His defense secretary, Casper Weinberger, observed: "I believe the world is going to end—by an act of God, I hope—but every day I think time is running out" (quoted by Reginald Stackhouse, The End of the World, 1997, p. viii).

Former French president Valery Giscard d'Estaing commented on the state of humanity: "The world is unhappy because it doesn't know where it is going and because it senses that, if it knew, it would discover that it was heading for disaster" (ibid.).

Former U.S. vice president Al Gore speculated on the longevity of the world: "Two world wars, the Holocaust, the invention of nuclear weapons, and now the global environmental crisis have led many of us to wonder if survival . . . is possible" (Earth in the Balance, 1992, p. 366).

Indeed, experts from many fields share the concern that we could see the end of civilization as we know it. These concerns have created an age of anxiety, especially in a world where so little seems certain anymore.

Many others, however, say there is no need to be concerned about the world ending. They point to epidemics of end-time panic that have raged in the past. They list many failed past predictions regarding the end of the world.

Such criticism is justified to a point. Doomsday predictions have abounded for centuries; date-setters have been wrong many times. The problem with most of these prognostications was that, though well intentioned, the specific chronological details were the ideas of men who badly misinterpreted information in Scripture.

Is there a source to which we can go for reliable information? There is! That one reliable source is the Bible—what it really says. Many people today have a vague idea that the Bible says something about the end of the world. Does it? Most certainly!

The end of an age

Although we do not know the time, one thing we know for sure is that the Bible prophesies the end of the world as we know it. But what does that mean?

When Jesus'disciples asked Him about "the end of the world," they weren't talking about "world" in the sense of our physical planet, the earth. The Greek word translated "world" is aion, from which we get the English word eon. The two mean essentially the same thing—an age, an epoch, an era .

Christ's followers well knew the many prophecies of the Old Testament that foretell the coming age of the Messiah. Our present time, the time of human rule on earth under the deceptive sway of Satan (1 John 5:19), is described by the apostle Paul as "this present evil age" (Galatians 1:4).

Another Greek word translated "world" in the New Testament is kosmos, which denotes the ordered world around us—that is, not the physical planet we live on but man's society and geopolitical dominion. This is what will end.

Paul and the other apostles understood that, at the end of this age, man's corrupt civilization will be swept away and a new era will dawn at the return of Christ. Peter described this change as one in which "times of refreshing" will come from God the Father through Jesus, who will return from heaven when "the time comes for God to restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy prophets" (Acts 3:19-21, New International Version).

This transition from man's misrule—which is, in reality, the unrecognized rule of Satan—to Christ's divine reign in the Kingdom of God was at the heart of the messages of the biblical prophets as well as the gospel Jesus taught. Scripture proclaims that the present age—the civilization and societies we know today—will terminate in a cascade of unimaginable destruction and violence that will climax at the return of Christ. In the New Testament alone, more than 300 verses refer to these events.

Signs of the end time

When Jesus'disciples asked about the end of the age (Matthew 24:3), He responded by listing several warning signs. The first would be massive religious deception, including religious teachers who, while claiming to represent Him, would not follow His teachings but would deceive many through a counterfeit Christianity.

He also said there would be many wars and other conflicts between nations and ethnic groups. He also spoke of famines, massive disease epidemics and earthquakes.

The problem with trying to precisely predict the end from these signs is that these trends and conditions have been with us in varying degrees from the first century until now. This helps explain why end-time fervor has arisen repeatedly for two millennia.

Many believe that man's development of modern weaponry with the ability to annihilate human life is a sure sign of the last days. As for this destructive potential being a sign of the end, Jesus did say that "if that time of troubles were not cut short, no living thing could survive" (Matthew 24:22, Revised English Bible, emphasis added throughout).

Our awesome scientific and technological advancements have bequeathed to this and future generations a heritage over which hangs the ultimate sword of Damocles. Indeed, without miraculous intervention from God the human race has no assurance of survival.

However, we should realize the sobering fact that, no matter when the end of the age comes, people will be living at that time who will dispute the possibility of the world ending. Under inspiration of God, the apostle Peter tells us that "scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, and saying, 'Where is the promise of His coming?'" (2 Peter 3:3-4).

Regardless of when it occurs, there will be people who express disdain even as the very time approaches. No matter how difficult things look, some will assure everyone that man has everything under control. Tragically, such assurances will do nothing but provide a false sense of security, leading people to foolishly continue to trust in human ability rather than in God.

As the end approaches

However long it is until the actual end of the age, one theme the biblical writers emphasized is that it draws nearer every day. Paul warns us that "now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed" (Romans 13:11).

And salvation is certainly important to keep in mind as everything falls to pieces around us. The end of the world as we know it, though it includes many catastrophes on a scale never seen in history, is not all bad news for mankind. It includes good news too. God will intervene before it is too late (Matthew 24:21-22). The alternative is not only the destruction of human civilization but the annihilation of the human race itself.

The only wise action for anyone who understands what is coming is to turn to God with repentance and obedience (Acts 3:19). Indeed, "now [God] commands all people everywhere to repent. For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed [i.e., Jesus Christ]" (Acts 17:30-31, NIV).

When Jesus comes in power and glory, He will rebuke the world for its sins. This is part of the message proclaimed from the beginning of the true Christian Church. On the day of the Church's founding, the apostle Peter exhorted his audience, "Be saved from this perverse generation" (Acts 2:40).

This is the message the Church is still commissioned to proclaim. How were the people to be saved? Peter urged them to repent—to turn from their own sinful, selfish ways and to seek God's ways—and to be baptized (Acts 2:38). At His second coming Christ will reward those who do so.

Focus not on timing but preparation

It is not a question of whether the world—man's corrupt civilization—will end. God's Word says it will. Our chief concern should not be when it will end. Jesus said it would be impossible for men to precisely calculate this ahead of time (Matthew 24:36, 42, 44).

Instead, our main focus should be to seek God to be spiritually prepared for the times that are coming. "But keep on the alert at all times," said Jesus, "praying in order that you may have strength to escape all these things that are about to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man" (Luke 21:36, New American Standard Bible).

The Bible describes believers as living in a state of expectancy, in a state of tension, between two worlds. We live in the present world, which we know will end, while we look for the world to come with the return of Christ. "So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him" (Matthew 24:44, NIV).

We need to seek God in heartfelt repentance and faith, leading to baptism by God's true ministers so we can receive God's Spirit (Acts 2:37-39). Then we are to remain faithfully obedient while awaiting Jesus' return. For "he who endures to the end shall be saved" (Matthew 24:13).

Jesus never said the Christian calling would be easy. On the contrary, He said it would be challenging (Matthew 7:13-14). The reward, though, is great, far beyond anything we can imagine. GN
